- Cut up your credit cards. When you pursue debt relief through consolidation, you will most likely have to cancel the credit card accounts included in the consolidation. This will help you avoid the temptation of running up the balances once again. If you don't participate in a professional consolidation program, still take the initiative to cut up your cards. You may want to keep one card hidden away at home for emergencies only, but the rest of your cards should go.
- Spend less than you earn. If you don't adhere to this simple principle, your debt relief efforts will never last. The only way to tell whether you're spending less than you're bringing in is to keep track of expenses and income. If your expenses regularly exceed your net income, then you have to make adjustments until you have a surplus or at least break even.

- Set a realistic time limit and stick to it. Pick a date by which you'd like to be debt-free. You don't want the date to be discouragingly far away, but you also need to be realistic in the amount of time you allow yourself. Talk to your debt relief or consolidation service about a realistic timeline and hold yourself to that goal.
- Put a moratorium on spending. Temporarily, you're going to have to stop spending until you get your debt under control. Resolve not to spend money on anything but your budgeted expenses, such as food essentials, rent or mortgage payments, etc. Remember that impulse purchases provide instant gratification, but they add up in the long run.
